Werewolves in Germany: Myth, Wolf Belts and the Case of Peter Stump

When wind moves through bare treetops, a distant howl can awaken an old question: what if something waits in the forest that is both human and predator? A werewolf is a legendary figure: a human who transforms into a wolf or a wolf-like being. How that transformation happens differs from one story to another.

What is a werewolf, and what comes from cinema?

Today, many immediately think of a full moon, an infectious bite and silver bullets. That familiar combination should not be projected onto every older legend. Werewolf stories follow different rules. Their fascination lies in the shifting boundary between human and animal.

In stories of the wolf belt, a special skin or magical belt enables the change. Transformation is more than physical: it asks what remains of a person when social rules and inhibitions disappear.

Peter Stump: the werewolf of Bedburg

One of Germany's best-known werewolf stories concerns Peter Stump, also known as Peter Stubbe. The town of Bedburg remembers the farmer from Epprath who was convicted of witchcraft and alleged werewolfery in 1589. His public execution is dated October 31, 1589.

Pamphlets carried the case beyond the region. Reports turned accusations into a widely repeated horror story, involving a pact with the devil, transformation into a beast and serious acts of violence.

Why we do not present accusations as facts

Historical reports about an alleged beast do not prove transformation. Surviving accounts must be read against the background of witch persecution, religious interpretation and sensational pamphlets. Gruesome details should not simply be presented as an established biography of the accused.

This distinction matters to the compendium. The werewolf is a compelling horror figure; persecution under such accusations belongs to a history of real violence. We can examine both without confusing them.

The beast as an artistic motif

What interests us is the tension between restraint and instinct. Behind a familiar face waits another shape; behind the howl, perhaps a last trace of humanity. This is dark fantasy, not an explanation of historical crimes.
