Who Was Lilith? Demon, Adam's First Wife and Symbol of Self-Determination

A woman leaves paradise because she refuses to submit. Better a harsh wilderness than a gilded cage. This story shapes today's image of Lilith, yet it is only one layer of a much older, contradictory tradition.

Lilith is a mythological figure whose role changes across texts and eras. She appears as an unsettling night being, a demon and, in a medieval story, Adam's first companion. Modern interpretations may see her as a symbol of independence and self-determination.

What are Lilith's roots?

The name's history leads into ancient Near Eastern and Jewish traditions. Connections with Mesopotamian lil-spirits are debated. They do not establish an unbroken biography of one unchanged figure across thousands of years.

In the Hebrew Bible, Lilit appears in Isaiah 34:14 amid a devastated landscape and its uncanny inhabitants. The familiar story of Adam's first wife is not told there, nor is she introduced that way in Genesis.

Was Lilith really Adam's first wife?

The detailed account appears in the medieval Alphabet of Ben Sira. In that story, Lilith refuses to submit to Adam and leaves him. Three angels are sent to bring her back, but she refuses.

This should therefore be identified as a medieval legend. “Adam's first wife” describes one tradition, rather than a historical person or a uniform teaching shared by all Jewish traditions.

What kind of demon is Lilith?

Later traditions associate Lilith with nocturnal danger, sexuality and threats to mothers and children. Protective practices and amulets show how seriously such fears were taken. The figure reflects ideas about danger, bodies and social boundaries.

What does Lilith stand for today?

A contemporary reading may focus on her departure: a figure who leaves her assigned place and accepts the cost. For us, this is a powerful image of independence. It does not replace older, often threatening depictions; it shifts the emphasis.

That contradiction is rich material for dark art. Lilith can embody otherness, pride and fear of the untamed at once. Her meaning need not shrink to one slogan.
